What is A Periodic Table?
If you ever learned Chemistry, you won't feel foreign to the phrase periodic table. A periodic table is a table that is filled with chemical elements in order of their atomic number. American Chemical Society known as ASC defines the periodic table as a table that organizes all discovered chemical elements in rows (periods) and columns (groups) according to increasing atomic number. The periodic table is useful for commoners, especially students, and even for scientists. This is because the periodic table's scheme helps someone to recognize trends in the element's properties, including electronegativity, ionization energy, and atomic radius.
The periodic table was invented by Dmitri Mendeleev around 1869. Since then, the periodic table has grown for around 150 years until today. With a total of 118 known elements, the merit of the periodic table especially for chemistry and physics studies is remarkable. Each square on the table consists of letters and numbers. The letters represent the chemical name of the element, meanwhile, the number speaks for its atomic number.
Why Learning About Periodic Table is Important?
Everything that exists in this world is constructed through the elements, including humans. There are three types of elements depending on the temperature, solid, liquid, and gas. By learning about the periodic table, we can understand more about ourselves and the environment around us. With more advanced purposes, scientists can predict the properties of the Earth and even in outer space. BBC UK stated that the periodic table is named one of the most significant achievements in science by the United Nations. For its great benefits, the United Nations declared the year 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table, as it also marks the 150th year of the periodic table anniversary.
What Are The Suitable Students' Activity to Learn Periodic Table?
Muhammad Furkan et. al. stated in their research the importance of teachers being creative when they teach the periodic table. They said that understanding the periodic table is important for students because it is the foundation for understanding chemistry as a whole. Since students generally thought chemistry was a boring and abstract subject, teachers need to be creative in delivering relevant and efficient classroom learning, which will improve students’ engagement in learning. Through the same research, they suggested that the Periodic Table Fun Study Board (PROFSTAR) is one of the effective activities for students to learn about the periodic table. Since this activity is based on the Monopoly board game, it will excite the students —or maybe even the teachers. Through the PROFSTAR activity, all the students will actively contribute and this will lead the students to understand the periodic table in a unique and fun way.
What is The Trick to Memorize Periodic Table?
Memorizing the periodic table is essential for students since it will help them in their exams. There are many ways to memorize the periodic table, let's see a few of them! First is the most basic and traditional way: repetition. This strategy might sound dreary, but it is one of the most effective ways to memorize the periodic table. The students can start by memorizing a bunch of elements and reciting them over and over. In no time, they will master all 118 elements in the periodic table.
Another way to memorize the element is through Acronyms and Acrostics. Students can use the HHeLiBeBCNOF pronounced as heeliebeb kernoff to memorize the first nine elements. If the acronyms sound too complicated and hard to remember, the students can try the acrostic Here He Lies Beneath Bed Clothes, Nothing On, Feeling Nervous. There are still many other tricks that you can find to suit your students; need like flashcards, songs, mental imagery, the shortcut, and more. The teacher also can use the Periodic Table Activity Worksheets to help students memorize the periodic table.
What are The Top 5 Most Important Elements in the Periodic Table?
Every element is important of course, but there are 5 elements that humans cannot live without. Those five elements are, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and, sulfur. Oxygen is important since humans need it mainly for respiration and blood circulation. Carbon is essential for humans because 18% of our bodies consist of carbon. what we consume every day such as sugar, proteins, and vitamins are made up of carbons. Hydrogen is a crucial element in the synthesis process of water. Nitrogen is used for the synthesis process of proteins. Meanwhile, sulfur is important because it is used for the sulphuric acid synthesis process. Even though these five chemical elements are the most important elements for human life, we cannot ignore the other elements since they also have a role in our lives. You can learn about each chemical element's characteristics with our Periodic Table Activity Worksheets!
What Are The Four Trends in the Periodic Table?
Periodic table trends are distinct patterns that exist in the periodic table to depict different aspects of a certain element, especially the size and the electronic properties. Periodic table trends provide a precious tool to easily predict element properties. Here are the four trends in the periodic table:
• Electronegativity — how prone an atom is to form a chemical bond.
• Atomic Radius — the measure of the atom's size.
• Electro Affinity — how qualified an atom is in receiving electrons.
As an essential learning medium for chemistry, teachers should introduce the students to periodic tables. The worksheets of periodic table activity could be the alternative for the teachers to help the learners understand the chemical elements through the rows (period) and column (group) and every topic that surrounds them, such as atomic number, atomic mass, chemical symbols. These worksheets also help the learners to understand the three divisions of the chemical elements: metal, non-metal, and metalloid elements. Hence, using these worksheets of periodic table activity is important to aid the learners while they learn chemistry.
