Learn about shape in a fun way with these Sailboat Printable Shapes Worksheets!

Summary: Shape is a flat area with an outline at the edges. There are two types of shapes, geometric and biomorphic (natural). Understanding shapes will help the kids to develop the identification and organization of visual information. Being able to recognize and differentiate shapes will develop children's critical thinking and problem-solving ability. One example to help children learn shape is through the form of a sailboat.

What is Sail Boat?

When we watch tv or movies with summer and tropical themes, we see a lot of clips of various kinds of boats in the sea. According to the Cambridge dictionary, a sailboat is a tiny boat with sails to help it propel. Generally, the size of a sailboat is smaller than a sailing ship. There are various types of sailboats. Some popular ones are a cutter, catboat, dinghy, ketch, schooner, sloop and yawl.

The classic sailboats are monohulls, meaning they depend on their stability on the ballast. The weight of the ballast range from 30% to 50% of the boat, and it might cause some problems. It will cause the watercraft to struggle to manoeuvre and decrease its acceleration ability. Another problem is if the sailboat does not have buoyant foam or air tanks, it will sink. However, currently, many people prefer sailing with the multi-hull catamaran or the trimarans. Modern sailboats have a lightweight design, which will omit the problems in the traditional one.

What are the Types of Sail Boat?

A sailboat moves with the help of the wind to launch forwards. Depending on the wind power, they can move fast if the wind is strong enough. This watercraft has around one to five sails, depending on the body size. Based on the National Sailing Hall of Fame, sailboats have five primary parts, hull, rig, running rigging, sails and underwater appendages.

There are three types of sailboats based on three peculiar characteristics (Hull, Keel, Mass Configuration and Sails). The hull is made from fibreglass, metal, or wood. There are monohulls (one hull), catamarans (two hulls), and trimarans (three hulls). Catamaran and trimaran are the advanced versions of the monohull. The keel is the lateral surface of a sailboat. The keel sailboat intends to counter the sideways force, launch forward by making a lift, and stabilize the watercraft by producing ballasts. There are various shapes of keel sailboats (full-length, the fin, wing or bulb, bilge and centreboard or daggerboard). In the Mass Configuration and Sails, some popular boats are sloop, fractional rig sloop, cutter, ketch, schooner, yawl, and cat.

What is the Use of Sail Boat?

Sailboats are one example of ancient watercraft. Back in the Ancient Egypt era, the Egyptians put sails on their boat to cross the upstream of the Nile River. In the following years, people used sailboats to establish the water route for international trade activity. Recently, people used ships with motor power to replace the sailboat. Nowadays, people utilize sailboats for pleasure activities, racing and cruising. There are many variations to enjoy in each venture. Racing with sailboats varies in terms of time, boat types, and distances. If you prefer a more relaxing endeavour, you can cruise on any water surface (oceans, lakes, rivers, canals, or coastal water). Cruising can be a healing and peaceful activity for spending the holiday.

What is Shape?

Introducing shapes to young students is essential because it helps the children to understand geometric and natural forms. The definition of shape is simple. It is a flat area with an outline at the edges. There are two types of shapes, geometric and biomorphic (natural). The characteristics of geometric shapes are rigid and regular, such as rectangles, squares and triangles. We could find geometric shapes in things made by humans (machines or buildings). Meanwhile, biomorphic or natural forms are irregular and pliable. We can discover biomorphic shapes in nature, such as flowers, leaves and rocks.

How to Introduce Shapes to Young Children?

Shapes outline the edge of an area. It can be in 2D or 3D and opened or closed forms. We make shapes by combining the elements of curves, lines and points. Most of them have a name based on their body structures. Teachers or parents could introduce this topic by drawing them on the board or flashcards. Ask the students to copy and tell them the name of the shape. The teacher could provide various practices and drills to help the young students get familiar with many forms. The teacher also could incorporate this topic with other lessons, such as numerical, cutting, reading, or writing. Teaching about shapes needs various kinds of active learning. The teacher can engage in craft activities for a fun and exciting lesson.

Why do Young Children Need to Learn about Shapes?

Learning about shapes might look like something unnecessary; however, there are many benefits to it. Understanding this topic will help the kids to develop the identification and organization of visual information. This knowledge would also support the students in other lessons, such as mathematics, science, art and more. Knowing many shapes is beneficial because they are everywhere in the students' life. It is also a foundation of a more complex concept of space, which they need. Being able to recognize and differentiate shapes will develop children's critical thinking and problem-solving ability.
