Summary: Respect is the feeling of admiration for someone or something that sparks good ideas and qualities to our standard. As parents and teachers, we should teach our children and students how to respect and gain respect from others. There are four types of respect, evaluative, obstacle, directive, and institutional. Teaching respect in school is essential to form the students as someone who can honor everyone.

What is Respect?

Respect is not a strange word for us. We can find that phrase easily in every written medium we set our eyes on. However, do you know what respect is? The definition of respect based on the Cambridge Dictionary is the feeling of admiration for someone or something that sparks good ideas and qualities to our standard.

It means that we accept someone for who they are, even when they have a different take on something from us.

It is an aspect of building a relationship, whether romantic, friendship, or business. As parents and teachers, we should teach our children and students how to respect and gain respect from others; since it does not come naturally, we should learn it step by step.

What are the Four Kinds of Respect?

As one of the oldest life values in human history, respect is rooted so tightly in our society. It is an essential sense of human social structure. Each type of respect has a different feature of honor basis expressed in its specialties. Hudson explains four kinds of respect based on the object:

  1. The Evaluative is similar to supportive attitudes like esteem and admiration. People gain this based on common judgment.
  2. The Obstacle is about the object that, if it does not take properly, will prevent someone from achieving something.
  3. The Directive utilizes requests, rules, advice, laws, or rights as guides to do something.
  4. The institutions are social institutions or roles in a practice that employ positions to represent the institution.

What is the Foundation of Respect Behaviour?

To gain respect from others, we should respect other people initially. Respect is not only a matter of collecting trust for our power. It is the aspect of living in a social community. There are ten groundwork behaviors of respect that we should fulfill:

  1. We should listen to others attentively to understand their feeling. Added gestures like eye contact are essential to make them know that you are paying attention to their stories.

  2. Fulfill your promises, even for the smallest one. Once you break your word, people will likely lose their trust in you and eventually their respect.
  3. Give support and always encourage people around you.

  4. Interact with other people and always ask about their day. You never know who needs your help.

  5.  Express your gratitude by thanking people for their help and support for you.

  6. Distribute useful messages or information if you have one. It might be health tips, food recipes, or job vacancies.

  7. Speak your opinion if you find something is wrong or will be a danger to your surroundings.

  8. Be empathetic to others and try to be thoughtful before you advise someone else.

  9. Grow up while developing yourself to be better and learn from your mistakes.

  10. Suit yourself if you should work in a group and try to contribute to the team.

What are the Elements of Respect?

Marc Reid mentions the four elements of respect that everyone should have, understanding and support, civility and professionalism, fairness and integrity, and trust and recognition.

A person should understand others feeling and encourage them to show their care. While living in a social life setting, we should behave in the standardization norm that runs in the place.

When we decide something for many people, make sure the decision is fair and full of integration. When someone else gets a new chance to do something, trust them and recognize their effort when they successfully finish them. When a respected chain between people is broken, we can track these four elements to find the solutions.
