What is a Polynomial?

Polynomials are algebra equations consisting of variables and coefficients. Polynomials can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations. The word polynomial comes from the Greek, poly, which means many nominals. Polynomials can have many number terms.

Polynomials are used to explain the relationship between variables. The exponent for each variable must be a non-negative number. If written in equations, polynomials are written in this formula.

P(x) = anxn + an-1xn-1 + …. a1x + a0

  • x = variable
  • xn, xn-1, a0 = exponent
  • an, an-1, a1x = coefficient
  • a0 = constant

Examples of polynomials are as follows.

  • 2x2 + 3x2 - x
  • x2 + 2x
  • 7x + y

What are the Types of Polynomials?

In general, polynomials have 3 types; monomials, binomials, and trinomials. The three types of polynomials are based on number terms in the polynomial. Let's discuss the 3 types of polynomials here!

  • Monomial: This is a polynomial with one term. A single term in this polynomial cannot be equal to zero. Examples of monomials are 3x, -2xy, and 5.
  • Binomial: A binomial has two terms. Binomial is also defined as the addition or subtraction of two or more monomials. An example of a binomial is -2x + 3.
  • Trinomial: A trinomial is a polynomial equation consisting of three terms. An example is – 8x2+2y+7.

What are the Polynomial Theorems?

To understand and solve polynomial problems, use the following polynomial theorems.

  • Division Property: The main property of polynomials is division. If a polynomial is in the form of a fraction with the degree of the numerator greater than the degree of the denominator, the polynomial can be simplified. The method is to divide the two polynomials by the same number.
  • Polynomial Factorization: The factors of a mathematical equation or function are numbers, constants, variables, terms, and coefficients. All these factors divide the mathematical expression. This also applies to polynomial functions. So, all polynomials have at least two factors, 1 and the number itself.

How to Solve Polynomial Problems?

To solve polynomial problems, you can use two methods.

  • Linear Polynomials: This method is used to solve polynomials that have no degree. For example, 3x-9. The method is to make the equation equal to zero or 3x-9 = 0. If calculated, the result is x = 3.
  • Quadratic Polynomials: This method is specifically used to solve polynomial equations that have degrees. An example is 2x2+12x+18. You must make the equation equal to zero. Then, change the equation to factor (2x+6)(x+3) so x = -3.

How is Polynomial Used in Life?

Polynomials are widely used in everyday life. Examples are in these areas.

  • Electronics: In electronics, you will find many uses of polynomials. An example is the formula for Ohm's law which is expressed as V = IR. This law is used to explain the resistance of a resistor to the current passing through that resistor.
  • Finance: Finance also uses polynomials to solve financial problems. An example is to calculate total loans and company valuation. Polynomials are used to calculate accumulated interest.
  • Chemistry: Polynomials are also used in chemistry. An example is to calculate the gas equation using the ideal gas law PV = nRT.
  • Data: Because polynomials relate to mathematical equations, they are often used to analyze data. The data uses the equation y = mx + b so it uses the concept of polynomials to interpret the meaning of this equation.
  • Engineering: Engineering is also closely related to polynomials. An example is the use of polynomials to solve Newton's law F = ma.
