How to Study Piano Notes?

The piano is one of the popular instruments that people want to master. A piano is a musical instrument that has wire strings. It produces sound when the player presses the keyboard.

A basic and modern piano has 88 keys with a compass of seven additional keys. The white keypads of the piano are the diatonic notes; meanwhile, the blacks are the sharps and flats. Diatonic is the arrangement of seven essential pitches.

Some people also refer to this as pianoforte. The beautiful and elegant feeling of the play mesmerized many people. However, when some people finally face the instrument, some feel burdened. There are some strategies to help beginners who want to play the piano:

  • Start by knowing the piano. Understand each element of it and try to get to know it.
  • Learn the basics and let yourself get immersed.
  • Make a schedule for practice, and do not slack off.
  • Understand the pattern of the piano music.
  • Prepare your mental and physical before practicing.
  • Exercise with the music or song you like.
  • Get an expert tutor or join a piano course.

Why is Learning Piano Beneficial for Young Children?

The ability to play piano does not only improve the children's musical ability. Playing the piano gives many benefits in the physical and psychological aspects.

Some researchers agree that playing the piano can improve fine motoric skills, dexterity, and eye-to-hand coordination. Studying music also makes people calm, which can reduce stress. It also can lower blood pressure and improve immune strength, which is good for health.

What are The Elements of Sheets Music of Piano?

As a beginner, reading music sheets might be burdensome and complicated. It is okay. Everyone starts from zero, right? Below are the elements of music sheets:

  • Stave: The Stave is the five lines in the music sheets that have a function to hold the notes. It helps the pianist to understand which tone they should play. Some people refer to Stave as Staff.

  • Bars: Bars are vertical lines that divide the Stave.

  • Treble Clef: Treble Clef shows the pianist's range in the notes on and between the lines. The player usually plays the notes after the Treble Clef with the right hand. It is also known as G Clef.

  • Bass Clef: Bass Clef is on the lower part of the notation, and pianists usually play them with the left hand. Hence, some players agree that it is easy to play and remember. This element is also known as F Clef.

  • Key Signature: Key Signature is the indicator of the key in which the song is played. The mark of this element could be sharps (#) or flats (b).

  • Time Signature: The time signature is placed after the Treble Clef, which gives information about the beats amount and the position in each bar. Thinking of the time signatures as the rhythm can help a beginner to understand this element.

  • Note Symbols: Note symbols are the representation of the sound. We will learn more about this element in the next paragraph!

  • Rest Symbols: The rest symbol is to indicate a pause or break. There are some types of rest symbols in the sheet.

What are The Note Symbols in Piano Musical Sheets?

Two symbols dominate musical sheets, notes (to represent the sounds we hear) and rest (to represent the sounds we cannot hear). The note symbols help the pianist to tell what tones to play and the tempo. However, it also depends on how they look and their position.

In music education, you can read the note symbols from left to right (like the English alphabet). The pianist needs to control the tempo while playing the notes to be able to create heavenly music sounds. There are four types of them (whole note, half note, quarter note, and eighth note). The duration of the whole note is equal to one complete bar.

Similar to its name, the half note has one of two equal parts of the whole. The same rules also applied to the quarter and the eighth note. The duration is similar to their names. Notes symbols can also be stacked when there is a chord involved.
