Language is an essential part of human daily life. It become the bridge and the backbone of our communication necessity. Hence, it is understandable when linguistic skill and knowledge are the earliest things parents teach their children. This learning will help the kids to get familiar with language even though they might not use them correctly and appropriately. In many cases, parents usually teach the children about vocabulary. Young kids have a core memorization skill that makes them absorb many words into their brains. At this age, the children only grasp the terms and use them in a limited capacity as an element of daily conversation.

When the children enroll in formal school, the teacher will teach the students how to use the words they know in proper sentences or texts. The children will learn these words in the eight parts of speech. There are eight of them in English: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. These eight types will help the students understand the functions of the terms in a sentence. Learning about parts of speech will guide the students to exercise in making a proper and grammatically correct sentence. One word can serve as more than one part of speech when utilized in different occurrences. How Many Types of Noun are There?

Nouns have multiple functions in a sentence. It can be subject, direct and indirect object, subject, object complement, appositive, or modifier. For young students, the kinds of nouns they learn are usually about persons, places, or things. However, in the grammatical sense, there are complex divisions of nouns. Below are eight types of nouns:

  • Proper Noun: Proper noun refers to the actual names of a person, place, or thing.
  • Collective Noun: It means the term to refer to a group of people, animals, or objects.
  • Common Noun: Common noun is a name the society gives to a people, place, thing, or activity with the same traits.
  • Material Noun: It refers to the material or substance that we can perceive by our senses.
  • Concrete Noun: Concrete noun means the name for the tangible object we can see with our eyes.
  • Abstract Noun: This type is the opposite of concrete, meaning it is the term for things we cannot see but exist.
  • Countable Noun: It refers to the objects that we can count and have a plural form.
  • Non-Countable Noun: This type of noun means we cannot physically count them. 

How to Teach Students about Nouns?

Teaching nouns to young students might be simple because the kids can relate them to their daily life. However, it is still a challenge for the teacher. There are some activities the learners can do to help them improve their knowledge of nouns. The teacher can ask the students to identify the noun in a sentence. Another activity is to instruct the learners to sort the nouns they found in the text based on some categories (place, people, object, or animal). The teacher also can incorporate various fun and exciting games to boost learning motivation.

The noun is the most essential part of the sentence. It helps the reader and writer to understand the message of a sentence. It helps us to avoid misunderstanding when we read text or hear a speech.
