What is Alphabet Knowledge?

As we learn about literacy skills in the previous paragraph, we will learn about the alphabet knowledge in this part. According to the Department of Education of the State of Indiana, alphabet knowledge refers to the ability to recognize, name, write and identify the sounds of letters. They stated it is essential to master this skill as young as possible. There are various strategies that parents and teachers can use to help the youth learn this skill (reading books or stories, watching tv shows, using technology, playing games, etc). However, handwriting instruction is the best method to help students master alphabet knowledge.

There are three elements of alphabet knowledge, letter name, shape, and sounds. Below is a detailed explanation:

  • Letter Names: There are 26 English alphabets with their designated names. The students should memorize and distinguish all twenty-six labels.
  • Letter Shapes: There are 26 shapes of the alphabet that young students should master. They should be careful because some of them might look the same. Handwriting practice might be the best pick to help the kids memorize all 26 shapes.
  • Letter Sounds: The students should complete their alphabet knowledge by mastering the 26 sounds of the English letters.
