What is the Definition of Earthquakes?
Have you ever experienced an earthquake? The sudden movement of the ground will surprise you for a second, and sometimes even panic. The shaking level of this Earth's tremor varies. Sometimes we cannot feel, or the shake is light enough, and it feels like we are just swaying softly.
In a few cases, it is strong enough to tear down skyscrapers and buildings and cause tsunamis or volcano eruptions. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), an earthquake is when the Earth's surface violently shakes. It is one of the natural disasters humans have experienced since a long ago. Cause of an earthquake is when two blocks of Earth slip past one another.
The surface where the slip accident happened is known as the fault or fault plane. The origin mark of the earthquake is the hypocenter. The epicentre is the location above the hypocenter in the surface area.
The experts measure the earthquake's energy through a particular vibration (seismic waves) with a device known as a seismometer. People who have expertise in earthquake knowledge a seismologists.
What is a Volcano?
Natural disasters are terrifying, as they can happen unexpectedly, and their behaviors are unpredictable. Volcanic eruption is one of the most dangerous and deathly calamities. Based on the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a volcano is an opening in a mountain where lava, tephra, and steam burst into the surface. It can form a hill or mountain from layers of ash and rock by a repeated eruption. National Geographic divided the volcanoes into three types, which are active, dormant, and extinct.
An active volcano is a currently erupting volcano or one which can erupt in the future. A dormant volcano is a volcano that has not been active for some time but can erupt. Lastly, an extinct volcano is a volcano with a low possibility of erupting in the future.
There are two kinds of explosion by volcanic eruption, explosive and slow lava eruption. It can happen on the top opening of the mountain or the side vents. The various type of eruption rates and intensity and the composition of the magma is the determiner of the volcano's shape.
Besides on the land, the volcano can also appear on the ocean floor. Underwater volcano eruption can cause the forming of underwater mountains, which could turn into an island when the size increases and rises above the ocean.
How are Earthquakes and Volcanoes Related?
Both volcanoes and earthquakes are caused by the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates. It happened because of the heat and energy emitted from the Earth's core. Earthquakes can cause volcanic eruptions due to the powerful movement of tectonic plates. Similarly, volcanoes can cause earthquakes from the motion of magma within the volcano. Thus, one correlation between volcanoes and earthquakes is a cyclical relationship in which earthquakes cause volcanic eruptions, and magma movements cause earthquakes.
Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are dangerous natural phenomena that can cause danger to human life. Many experts stated that underwater disturbances such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, landslides, underwater explosions, and meteorite impacts could cause a tsunami.
It is a deadly natural disaster for humans and other living creatures. Hence, volcanic activities and earthquakes are related and can trigger each other occurrence.
How do Earthquakes and Volcanoes Affect the Tectonic Plate?
Tectonic plates on Earth create three types of boundaries, which are:
- Transform boundaries are the two slabs that slip through or wear away from each other. Transformation boundaries are horizontal movements of plates that do not create or destroy them.
- The divergent boundaries create ocean basins as the plates move apart. A diverging is a boundary when two plates make a gap between them.
- A convergent boundary is when two plates collide and overlap to form a subduction zone.
Tectonic plates have a gigantic size and may contain both land and sea. These tectonic plates interact with each other due to the Earth's internal heat. This heat causes the movement of matter under the crust and releases energy from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Interactions between tectonic plates occur at three primary locations, the convergence of oceanic continents, where continents meet oceans.
The second is intercontinental convergence, where two continents meet. Lastly, there is the interoceanic convergence, where two oceans meet. Earthquakes and volcanic activities are the primary reasons for the tectonic plate movement.
Why is it Necessary to Study Earthquakes and Volcanoes?
Learning about earthquakes and volcanic activity is necessary because it helps us to understand the Earth, our eternal home. Understanding its behavior will let us anticipate if something is happening, and we can create a mitigation plan.
Learning the behavior and characteristics of the earthquake and volcanic eruption will help us save lives and utilize the aftermath effects of the disaster. It can also be the window for the students to discover new knowledge that will lead them to a future career.
An earthquake is when the Earth's surface violently shakes. Earthquakes can cause damage to the area that is affected. It also can be caused by various natural factors, such as volcano activities or the plates and tectonic activities.
There are various topics that the students should master while learning about earthquakes and volcanoes, such as volcano characteristics, types of volcanoes, effects of volcanic eruptions, earthquake and volcano safety measures, volcanic hazards and risk assessment, earthquake and volcanic landforms, and more.
Through the Earthquakes and Volcanoes Worksheets, the students can learn all these topics in a fun and simple way. These worksheets will simultaneously improve their knowledge of geography and boost their learning motivation.
