What is a Complex Sentence?

While reading various types of text, we always bumped into sentences. Sentences are what make the text exist. An ideal sentence usually has 15-20 words. In some cases, it can be less. A sentence with too many words can confuse the readers and make the message difficult to absorb. According to the dictionary of Cambridge University, a sentence is a group of words.

A proper sentence has a subject, verb, and object in it. People use them to give statements, questions, instructions, or exclamations. A sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with punctuation, such as a point (.) exclamation mark (!) or question mark (?). There are four types of sentences, simple, complex, compound, and complex compound.

A complex sentence means an independent clause and one or more dependent ones. The definition of an independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a proper sentence with a subject and finite verb of a sentence. The writer should link the dependent to the independent clause in a complex sentence. Noun, adjective, and adverb clauses are some types of dependent.

Using complex sentences in writing can help the author to deliver their ideas and opinions in an organized way. In making literature work, a proper understanding of grammar is not enough. The writer should learn to arrange and link each word, clause, phrase, and sentence into one harmonious union.

How to Identify Complex Sentences?

In mastering complex sentences, we should understand their elements of it. Knowing the part of it will help us when we have to write or read a text. There are two elements of complex sentences, independent and dependent clauses. There are two conditions based on these clauses.

If the dependent clause comes before the independent, you should put a comma (,) after the dependent. However, if the position reverses, there is no need to put the comma (,) between the clauses.

This type of sentence shows the relationships and relations between the elements of the sentence than in the compound type. Hence, spotting the clauses is the best way to recognize a complex sentence. The clause itself is a simple sentence with one verb group.

Connect Clauses in Complete Sentences

  • Use relative pronouns (that, which, who or whose).
  • Put conjunctions (while, because, although, as, when, until, unless, through, by, before, where, if, and more.)
  • Apply the verb structures (participle verb form with -ing or -ed end) or the infinitive verb (to go, to see, or to become).

What are the Differences between Compound and Complex Sentences?

For the teacher, challenges in teaching students are something that they cannot avoid. It is part of the learning activity for the students and teacher. One of the challenges that many English teachers encounter when they teach complex sentences is some students struggle to differentiate between compound and complex sentences.

Based on the definition, a complex sentence consists of two elements (dependent and independent clauses). Meanwhile, a compound sentence has two independent clauses and somewhat one dependent. Below are the examples so the students can identify the differences:

  • I came late to school because my mom took a long time to find the car keys. (complex sentence)
  • After eating lunch, I went to the mall and watched a movie at the theatre. (compound sentence)

Why is Learning Complex Sentences Important for Students?

Like its name, making and understanding complex sentences might not be simple. It takes a repetition of practice before you can write them naturally. A complex sentence has many impacts for literature purposes. This sentence can show the readers the weight of one idea is heavier than another. In this case, the independent clause has more essence than the dependent.

Combining all types of a sentence (from simple to complex) can help the writer create engaging text and deliver a clear message for the readers to accept. Using complex sentences in a text will give various details and information to the audience. It also helps the author connect two distinct ideas or opinions to create contrasts.

How Many Types of Sentences Are There?

In English, there are four types of sentences simple, complex, compound, and compound-complex. A simple sentence has an independent clause without conjunctions or dependent clauses.

Complex sentences consist of one independent and one dependent clause. A compound sentence has two independent clauses with a conjunction (and, but, or, for, nor, yet, so) in between. Lastly, compound-complex sentences have one dependent and a few independent clauses.

It has conjunctions and subordinators. The teacher should teach the students all types of these sentences to help students arrange an engaging text and improve their literature ability.

Complex sentences, consisting of independent clauses and dependent clauses, are essential elements in the text. Mastering these sentences requires understanding their elements like relative pronouns, conjunctions, and verb structures.
