What does Social Study Mean?

Knowledge is one of the elemental needs of humans. It provides them with information that equips them to live their life. Knowledge is the foundation of various advancements we currently enjoy. It also becomes the bridge for humans to understand everything around them. In conclusion, we can say that knowledge is essential, and humans should always learn it. We can study them through various mediums and strategies. We can learn it through our discovery and via other people's explanations.

Commonly, people divide it into natural and social studies. The natural study refers to a knowledge of the wild and naturalistic elements around us. It learns about the thing that exists even before a human does. Meanwhile, social studies refers to the knowledge of something related to human and their findings or creations. It digs up into something that people can see and not see. According to Victoria Coleman, social study means the integrated knowledge of social sciences and humanity. We can say that it is an understanding of how humans affect each other and the environment. In this article, we will discuss this topic in detail.

How Many Themes for Social Studies Are There?

It is in the human nature to have curiosity in their mind. It is natural for us to seek an answer or explanation. One of the ways for us to satisfy our thirst for mystery is through learning social studies. As we know from the previous part, social science refers to the knowledge of human and their impacts. However, it is still a broad proficiency to learn. The experts divide it into chunks to help people to digest and understand it. According to the National Council of Social Studies (NCSS), there are ten themes of social studies that people should know:

  • Culture: Culture refers to various things, such as social behavior, institutions, and norms, that differ from one group of citizens to another.
  • Time, Continuity, and Change: It refers to the knowledge about past events, current moments, and the possibility of the future.
  • People, Places, and Environments: This studies the relationship between humans and their surrounding environments.
  • Individual Development and Identity: It refers to the study of how someone grows and builds their identity with various aspects around them.
  • Individuals, Groups, and Institutions: This theme teaches how humans act as individuals or as part of a community.
  • Power, Authority, and Governance: It refers to the knowledge of how a government works.
  • Production, Distribution, and Consumption: This is about how the goods and services are provided to people.
  • Science, Technology, and Society: It refers to the knowledge of how humans create innovation after understanding nature and its impacts on society.
  • Global Connections: It studies the relationship between countries.
  • Civic Ideals and Practices: This theme teaches how a citizen should act.

Why is Social Studies Important for Elementary Students?

As we learn from the previous chapter, social studies is a broad knowledge with various branches. People should master social sciences because it will help them crack many things. Hence, many experts recommend that young students start learning about this field when they are young. Social studies will prepare the youthful learners to have a solid foundation to master the lesson. It also helps them find their interest. It will guide them to know which education path they will take for their future. Learning social studies also makes young learners develop various skills and knowledge, such as empathy, logical reasoning, and critical thinking.

How to Teach Social Studies for Elementary Students?

Teaching social studies to elementary students might be challenging for teachers or parents. It is understandable because we cannot take it lightly when planting a solid foundation of knowledge for young learners. Below are some strategies to teach social studies to elementary students that parents and teachers could follow:

  • Use a fun presentation to grasp the students' attention.
  • Utilize unique worksheets as the medium to help the students practice.
  • Provide various types of reading to pique the students' literature curiosity.
  • Teach the young learners to make an interactive note.
  • Engage in simple and fun social projects.

What will happen if Human Do Not Learn Social Studies?

Learning and understanding social studies is essential for the students. It will help them throughout their life until they become adults. However, some people unsurprisingly take this knowledge lightly and deem it unimportant. It is a pity because social science holds equal weight as the natural. Without social studies, the world will go unbalanced. Humans might find many new inventions. However, if they cannot control it and do not have a clear regulation on how to use it, it will be a catastrophe. It also teaches humans to act accordingly and not harm the environment. Hence, social studies exist to balance natural science.
