What is Multiplication?

Multiplication is one of the basic arithmetic operations that is often used in everyday life. Multiplication is the repeated addition of one number to another number. So, the product of m and n is the addition of m by n.

Multiplication is denoted by an “x.” Apart from using the "x" sign, multiplication also uses a dot (.) or an asterisk (*). If written using a formula, multiplication is written as follows.

Multiplicand x Multiplier = Product

  • Multiplicand: first number
  • Multiplier: second number
  • X: multiplication symbol
  • Product: the result of multiplying the multiplicand and multiplier.

What are the Properties of Multiplication?

In general, the properties of multiplication are:

  • Commutative: If A and B are two numbers, A x B = B x A.
  • Associative: If A, B, and C are three numbers, A x (B x C) = (A x B) x C.
  • Distributive: If A, B, and C are numbers, A x (B + C) = (A x B) + (A x C).
  • Closure: The product of two whole numbers is a whole number and the product of a fraction and a whole number is a whole number.
  • Identity: If a number is multiplied by 1, the product is the integer itself. So, A x 1 = A.
  • Zero: Any number multiplied by 0 will produce 0. So, A x 0 = 0.

How to Solve Multiplication Problems?

To solve multiplication problems, use these 2 methods.

  • The most frequently used method is to use the times table. This table is a tool to help children memorize multiplication.
  • Understand the properties of multiplication to calculate multiplication. Understanding the properties of multiplication will also help children to simplify complex multiplication problems.

After mastering these 2 methods, calculate multiplication questions using this method.

1. If there are 2 or more numbers that are multiplied by another number. So, multiply the first number by the second number from the last number. For example:

    • 235 x 2
  • Step 1: multiply the number 5 by 2 (the result is 10, write the number 0 and add 1 in the next multiplication).
  • Step 2: multiply the number 3 by 2 (the result is 6 and add 1 from the previous multiplication).
  • Step 3: multiply the number 2 by 2

The result is 470.

2. To multiply two simple numbers, use a number line because it is easier. For example, multiply 3 and 4. If using a number line, do 3 jumps 4 times. The result is 12.

Why is Multiplication Important to Learn?

Multiplication is very important to learn for these reasons.

  • Multiplication is used in real life. One of them is counting money when buying goods.
