What is a Bucket List?
Have you ever heard the term bucket list? Many movies or literature usually tell the story of a character who makes a bucket list with many things they want to do. The plot will follow how the character pursues their way to make the things on the list actual. According to Stanford University, the bucket list is a checklist of things someone wants to do before they die.
It can consist of many and various things without limitations. It can vary from mundane to intense. Someone can put the food they want to try or an adventure they want to experience. This list will help people to reflect on their dreams and desires. Making a bucket list also helps to discover what is our life values, set future goals, and as a way to upgrade ourselves.
Even though the concept of a bucket list sounds a bit scary with the "something to do before death" term, it is simply a list of something that will excite and make life start living.
Why do People Make a Bucket List?
Some people might think that making a bucket list is childish because what is the use? Is it only to list some impossible things for fun and forget them later? Here, let me tell you. Creating a bucket list is more than writing a mere future and futile checklist.
It is the symbol of hope, aspiration, and passion of someone. No matter who you are, each person has a hidden dream they want to reach. Writing those on a bucket list will help people progress in achieving that dream. Loraine Couturier wrote that a bucket list is a useful mental tool to keep the fire of a dream.
Setting a vision for your life is the first step to achieving your dream life. Even though you might think what you do is useless, it still adds tiny milestones to the progress. Many people agree that working on their life goals will still affect how they value their lives. That progress will bring new excitement and energy to keep walking the path of life every day. Hence, making a bucket list is one of the strategies for living life.
How to Make a Proper Bucket List for Children?
Everyone can make a bucket list, even young children. Parents and teachers can guide the kids to write or create a bucket list. This activity can be an alternative for bonding between parents and children. It is also a medium for children to express themselves by uncovering their dreams and passions.
Through this activity, parents and teachers also can analyze the kids and students and define their preferences. It will help the adults to manage and plan the learning and parenting strategy. Making a bucket list with the children also helps them to motivate themselves to achieve their dreams.
There are various things that children may write on their bucket lists, such as their dream toys, their dream grade, their dream dress, their dream holidays, their dream gifts, and more. Some of the things on the list might sound silly and make the adults laugh.
However, it is the representation of themselves, and the adults can use them to know their children or students more. To make the bucket list more interesting for young kids, the adults can use colorful papers or worksheets and provide cute stickers to decorate it.
What are the Benefits of Making a Bucket List?
Whether hiking to Mount Everest or buying a new phone, every wish moves humans to continue their days. It helps them to motivate themselves. Shilagh A. Mirgain, a psychologist of health and sports, stated that making a bucket list will assist humans in evolving as humans live their life. Below are some perks of making a bucket list:
- Discover the value of life.
- Find the purpose and goal of life.
- Improve creativity.
- Set life in a proper and structured path.
- Help people to enjoy and value life.
- Keep track of how the progress goes.
Who Invented The Term "Bucket List?"?
The word bucket came from the French "buquet" which indicates a shaft used by French butchers in 1500 to hang up butchered animals by their heels or hooves. However, for the term "bucket list", the first person to popularize this is an American-British screenwriter, Justin Zackham. He introduces this term through his film "Justin's List of Things to Do Before I Kick the Bucket".
He shortens the title become "Justin's Bucket List". The words "before I kick the bucket" mean before he meets death. Hence, it means things he wants to experience and achieve before he dies.
Making a bucket list also helps to discover what our life values, set future goals, and as a way to upgrade ourselves. By using the Bucket List Worksheet, you can start to challenge yourself easily as these worksheets could be easily used for anyone.
You do not need to hassle yourself to make and prepare the template. All you have to do is to find your desired template and use them as you want!
